6:15 am
>> 6:15 right now. today is world diabetes day. >> health officials are focused on prevention efforts, especially in mexico. diabetes is a leading cause of death there. experts blame the obesity epidemic 71% of mexico's adult population is overweight, it
6:16 am
turns out. officials say the abundance of fast food is contributing to the problem, and they're urging people to make healthier choices. the american diabetes association is trying to raise awareness of diabetes in the united states. the group has an installation on display inside union station today. it shows the financial cost of the disease and the human cost as well. the a.d.a. says that diabetes has become a national epidemic in the united states. it affects more people than breast cancer and aids combined. >> three republican senators will hold a news conference today discussing the dead al tack on a u.s. consulate in libya. john maclean lindsey graham have criticized the obama administration for changing its story about what happened on september 11 and for allegedly ignoring security warnings. four americans, including the u.s. ambassador to libya, died in that attack. >> investigators are trying to find out what caused a small plane to crash into this house in jackson, mississippi. three people on the plane were killed.
6:17 am
they were actually headed to an f.a.a. safety conference. officials say the single-engine plane had just taken off when it started having problems. then it crashed here into the house, as you can see sparking a huge fire. one person escaped from the burning home without any major injuries. also want you to take a look at this amazing video from california. this is a neighborhood near san francisco which is cleaning up after an eight-inch water main broke, causing a mudslide. the mud is several feet deep in some places. no reports of any injuries luckily, but some people were forced to leave their homes and others without power, as you might imagine. officials say things would have been worse if they hadn't been able to shut off the valve to a huge water tank. >> in the aftermath of hurricane sandy, the head of the long island power authority says he'll retine at the end of the year. that announcement comes amid backlash about restoration efforts. about 3,500 homes still in the dark. the government has called for a

commission to investigate the utility. one group of residents has filed a class-action lawsuit over its response to the storm. the leng dairy rockefeller christmas tree goes on display today, and it will stand as a monument to hurricane sandy recovery. the 80-foot norway spruce comes from mount olive new jersey, a town battered by sandy's wind and rain. the tree's owner watched throughout the storm as the tree swayed, but it never broke and survived. now it will be the center piece for new york city's christmas. >> 6:18 right now. speaking of christmas, let's talk to jacqui jeras. it feels like christmas outside because it's cold. is this on par where we should be this time of year? >> no, we're definitely cooler than we should be. our average high is 59, and today we'll be lucky to break 50 at all. yeah you can complain a little bit, it's ok. we're starting out on the chilly side this morning, that's for sure. we did have a very strong cold front that dropped our temperatures down by about 20 degrees across much of the eastern coast. there you can see the front is offshore now, and we've got the
6:19 am
clear skies, so clear skies at night means cool mornings to start you out with. our temperatures, 37 degrees, and look at that sunrise just coming up. it is a beautiful day, so even though we're dealing with the chill, it's going to be looking really spectacular. 32 degrees at dulles. it's at 32 in gaithersburg. 33 at b.w.i. quantico at 36. 32 in manassas. check out culpeper, 28 degrees. and here's a look at the temperature change in the last 24 hours, so yesterday morning at 6:00 a.m. we were 10 degrees warmer than we are now at dulles. so you can see the big drop, and it is definitely feeling much colder for everybody and that's socked in all across the east coast. while we're cooler than average here, look at this big bubble of warm air across the nation's midsection. unfortunately, that's never going to reach us, because high pressure is controlling our weather. this is up to the north, and this is going to come to stay put and serve as a blocking pattern, and that's going to prevent any disturbances like this one to our south and east from getting up in our neck of
6:20 am
the woods. so we're just going to stay cool with a northerly flow and a dry spell can be expected. our forecast for today, looking for mostly sunny skies, our temperatures between 45 and 50 degrees. for tonight, looking for clear and cold conditions, 27 to 35. and our seven-day forecast featuring 50's all the way throughout. it will stay dry at least through the first half of the weekend. i have less confidence that we'll get any rain on sunday as the coastal storm now appears it will stay offshore, but we're going to keep it in there, just to remind to you keep a close eye on it as well. hey, follow mo twitter and facebook. today one of the things i've been tweet ago lot about is the solar flare and the geo magnetic storm as a result of that, bringing beautiful northern lights @jacquijeras and on facebook, a beautiful gallery i posted on both of those things. this one shows the sun.
6:21 am

[laughter] hopefully i can live through getting this award and manage the nationals in 2013. world series or bust, it's going to be my last year anyway. >> all proud of you. we're going to hope that a little public shaming will teach one ohio driver a big lesson. >> this is a 32-year-old woman. she's caught on tape driving past a stopped school bus. the judge fined her suspended her license, ordered her to stand at a corner for two days with a sign saying "only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid eye school bus." some don't think that she's taking the punishment seriously enough though. >> she's been smoking. she hiding her face.
6:28 am
you know l you know, she got sunglasses on, and it's snowing outside. you know, she don't care. >> her behavior ended up getting back to the judge and she says she's going to personally supervise the second day of her punishment this morning. >> cameras will probably be back out there. 6:28 right now. another half-hour of "good morning washington" coming your way. >> coming up, standing behind general john allen as the scandal surrounding former c.i.a.
